Celebrate Non-GMO Month for October
In a world where technology rules and babies are basically born with iPhones, the science behind food is complex and confusing, especially when it comes to genetically modified organism (GMOs). October is Non-GMO Month, which means there’s no better time than the present to educate yourself on this hot topic.
A GMO is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (also called gene splicing), gene modification or transgenic technology. There are many arguments behind why GMOs may save the food supply—crops that survive pests, plants that tolerate undesirable environments, bigger yields, more consistent outcomes. It’s a farmer’s biggest wish, but at what cost to our health?
According to the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit organization committed to educating consumers and providing verified non-GMO choices, most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe and have significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. The U.S. and Canadian governments, though, have approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale.
This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. There is no scientific consensus on the safety of GMOs, mainly because they haven’t been around long enough to study the long term health effects. Since many Americans are migrating toward more of a plant based and reduced processed diet, it’s important to focus on what is in food at its natural state. You might think twice before biting into that large, shiny apple knowing that its DNA was altered before it was even grown.
At Betsy’s Best Gourmet Nut and Seed Butters we have nothing to hide, which is why we use a clear label—we want to show off our clean ingredients! Betsy, a registered dietitian, created these nut and seed butters by hand for her family with the highest quality ingredients sourced from the best vendors. In fact, when asked at the production facility for the name of their food scientist, Betsy responded with a resounding “I don’t need chemicals in my food!”
In support of Non-GMO Month, we are proud to display our Non-GMO Project label on Betsy’s Best Gourmet Almond, Peanut and Seed butters, and we’re awaiting the Non-GMO Project certification for the newly released Gourmet Cashew Butter. Enjoy each bite of your Betsy’s Best knowing we have your health in mind and your family at heart.
