National Peanut Butter Day

National Peanut Butter Day

Hip Hip Hooray, it’s National Peanut Butter Day!!! This is a day for all of you peanut butter lovers to  celebrate! The golden color and savory flavor from the natural peanut offers a taste that has been desired for years. Although almost every other type of nut has been turned into a butter at some point, peanut butter will always have its mark as the original nut spread. Did you know peanuts are actually a legume? It’s true, but we’re happy this bean of sort is not one you cook with ham. The nutty flavor of peanuts goes well with so many different foods.  Whoever had the creative idea to take the peanut and grind it into a butter should be given an award…bread and jelly just wouldn’t be the same without the creamy spread of peanut butter!

The Perfect Way To Celebrate National Peanut Butter Day

At Betsy’s Best we appreciate this amazing nut and all of the incredible health benefits it provides.  Fiber, vitamin E, protein, vitamins and minerals….all packed in a tiny nut. Betsy, the creator of Betsy’s Best, is a registered dietitian and diabetes educator, so she understands the health benefits of peanuts. When she created Betsy’s Best she decided to take this original nut spread to the next level by adding other functional food ingredients to dress it up and put it in the spotlight. Cinnamon, chia seeds, organic honey and pink Himalayan salt took an already amazing butter and made it out of this world with a flavor and texture that has not ever been experienced before.  If you have yet to taste the pizzazz of this peanut butter creation, then grab a spoon and dig in to see for yourself.  It will be hard to stop at just one bite and trying it is the perfect way to celebrate National Peanut Butter Day!

Why Do Americans Love Peanut Butter?

Betsy's Best Gourmet Peanut Butter with cinnamon, chia seeds, organic honey, and Himalayan pink salt

When we think of America, we think of the American flag, the Statue of Liberty, the land of the free and the home of…peanut butter!

Peanut butter is as American as Ballpark hotdogs, apple pie, and classic Coca-Cola.

First introduced at the 1904 St. Louis World Fair, Americans have loved peanut butter ever since. Peanut butter was a vital source of protein for American soldiers in both World Wars. Early on it was used as a satisfying source of nutrition for America’s elderly population. But, American kids loved it, too! After all, didn’t we all grow up eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (well, almost all of us)?!

Since most of the world’s peanuts are grown right here in the U.S., it is no wonder that this roasted little nut blended its way into our hearts. Even President Jimmy Carter was raised on a peanut farm!

Although peanut butter is as American as red, white and blue, there has been a shift in the peanut butter world. Peanuts now compete with almonds, cashews, hazelnuts and seeds as other nut and seed butter combinations emerge. They are really only copying what the peanut started, but they will never steal the spotlight.

If you admit to being a true lover of peanut butter, you are not alone. If you hide your peanut butter jar so nobody else can eat it, you are still not alone. Us peanut butter lovers are out there saluting that tasty little nut while savoring its flavor. On a spoon or on a sandwich, it doesn’t matter—we love peanut butter! So, the real reason why Americans love peanut butter is simple. It is deliciously AWESOME!

And we might be a bit biased, but we think Betsy’s Best Gourmet Peanut Butter is the the best!

The PB&J Goes Gourmet – Join the Photo Contest

Join the peanut butter and jelly (PB&J) goes gourmet photo contest. This gourmet PB&J features Betsy's Best, chocolate chips and fresh strawberries on whole grain toast

Known as the All-American food and probably the most popular sandwich combo with kids, the peanut butter and jelly (aka PB&J) sandwich is still a winner. I remember this as the first meal I learned to prepare as a child, and I am sure many of you share the same story.

In fact the PB&J sandwich was the inspiration behind developing the Betsy’s Best brand. My daughter was a picky three-year old, and she refused to eat the all-natural peanut butter I’d bring home from the store. As a frustrated mother and unsure of what she would take to school, the hunt began for a nut butter she would eat. No jar I brought home would temp her taste buds. Out of desperation to create a peanut butter and jelly sandwich she would enjoy, Betsy’s Best peanut butter was developed. Now it is shared by all….including my daughter.

Even though I am grown up now, I am still in love with my childhood favorite, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I know others agree.  Some foods you just don’t grow out of.  Heck, even many National Basketball Association players enjoy a PB&J sandwich before games!  However I discovered that my taste buds matured as an adult, and I’m finding really creative ways to enjoy my favorite combo.

This summer I want to celebrate and shed light back on the peanut butter and jelly sandwich that we all loved as children.

Why does PB&J have to be just for kids?

Why not make a grown-up version for all of us to enjoy?

I encourage you to put on your thinking caps and think outside the box on some creative ways to enjoy PB&J. Try a different nut butter or even a seed butter. To make a  crazy jelly combo, add bacon or herbs and seasonings for a real twist.
