So, what is on your plate????  It is not mystery meat, but mystery organisms in the form of genetically modified foods.  They are found in nearly every processed food and have been a constant unwanted guest at your dinner table.  What you don’t know and can’t see won’t hurt you, right? Why the fuss? While GMO foods may allow for a more profitable crop for farmers and produce larger yelds, that could be coming at the expense of your health.  

GMO foods have been linked to a number of diseases such as cancer, endocrine disruption, DNA damage, reproductive toxicity, developmental toxicity, neurotoxicity, and probably many more undiscovered illnesses.  How should you avoid these toxic substances?  For starters, buy  organic when possible; however, there are also conventional foods that don’t use GMO crops.   If the label does not note non-GMO then contact the company or farm. Watch out for foods that contain these ingredients: soy, corn, cottonseed, canola, sugar from sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, some varieties of zucchini, high fructose corn syrup, soy lecithin, milk containing rbGH, rennet (ingredient in hard cheese), and aspartame.  Some grocery stores such as Whole Foods will be removing all GMO products from shelves by the end of 2015; this is a growing movement.  Also, look for the Non-GMO label on products or print off the non-GMO shopping guide created by the Institute for Responsible Technology.
